Zardari’s address to joint parliament be 1st in five year

The address of President Asif Ali Zardari to the joint session of the Parliament on September 20th will be the first in five year.

Former president Musharraf had addressed the joint session of Parliament only once during his eight years rule.

President Zardari will be the first democratic president to address the parliament after 10 years and 7 months after the speech of Rafique Tarar.

Rafique Tarar had addressed the joint session of parliament on Feb 28, 1998 in the second term of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

The government of Nawaz Sharif was dismissed when Army Chief Pervez Musharraf took the office as the Chief Executive on Oct 12, 1999.

After 2002 general elections, General Pervez Musharraf addressed the joint session of Parliament on Jan 17, 2004 for 45 minutes but disturbed by the opposition raising slogans 'Go Musharraf Go' and after that he did not address the joint session and kept violating the constitution.

It is the constitutional duty of the President to address the joint sitting of Parliament at the beginning of each parliamentary year. The tradition was badly affected during Former President Musharraf era.
