:President Asif Ali Zardari held talks with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Tuesday, expected to include discussions tribal areas along the Afghan border.

Brown welcomed Zardari with a handshake on the steps of his Downing Street office in London.

British officials were tight-lipped about the talks, saying only that Zardari was on a private visit to the country.

But officials in Pakistan said that the pair were due to discuss the conflict with Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in the northern tribal areas.

In a statement issued after Zardari's election victory, Britain's Foreign Office said: "We want to work with the government to support measures that promote stability, democracy and the rule of law and strengthen the democratic transition.

And it added: "The UK stands ready to assist the government in combating the shared threat of violent extremism and meeting the economic challenges they face.
